The Result: Improved design to eliminate part
damage with added cost reduction.
The parts that we make are typically designed by our customers. We
consult with our customers in improving that design.
Our customer was adding a machined fitting to the plain end of an
aluminum DELTATWIST™ tube to make a Hanson quick-disconnect connection.
This was a one-time use device for the medical industry. This tube-end
was magniformed to the fitting. As part of processing the tube, the
customer flushed the tube assembly with a cleaning solution which, when
rinsed, caused no problem to the assembly. This cleaning solution found
its way to wick between the tube and the fitting, where they were unable
to wash it out. The assembly would be successfully pressure tested.
However, with elapsed time on the shelf, the aluminum tube would be
eaten through by the cleaning solution.
Delta t received a call to stop production while the tube end was
redesigned to prevent the wicking and subsequent corrosion. Delta t
engineers went to the customer's site to learn first hand the problem
and to discover the best solution.
On the return flight, the idea was conceived to put the quick-disconnect
shape in the end of the tube, thus eliminating the fitting and the
wicking joint.
With consultation from the swage manufacturer, it was determined this
idea had possibilities. A die set was purchased and sample tubes were
sent to the swage machine manufacturer.
Problem solved! Now this end configuration is common to the industry.
The quick-disconnect shape can be applied to 1/2" - 5/8" OD tubes (also
in stainless steel).
Delta t added another satisfied customer that is pleased with the part,
the support and the quick service.
